മഹാബലിയെ ആദരിക്കുക :അപഹാസ്യനാക്കാതിരിക്കുക!

    ഓണം ഇതാ  വീണ്ടും വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു. കേവലം ഒരു പുനരാവര്ത്തനമായി. എല്ലാം പഴയതുപോലെത്തന്നെ.കാട്ടിക്കൂട്ടാന്‍ വേണ്ടി മാത്രം ഒരോണം! പണ്ടത്തെപ്പോലെ ഉള്ളു തുറന്നു ഓണം ഇന്ന് നമുക്കാഘോഷിക്കാന്‍ പറ്റുന്നില്ല. എന്നിട്ടോ ഒരു വഴിവാടുപോലെ നാം എന്തൊക്കെയോ കാട്ടിക്കൂട്ടുന്നു.ചെയ്തില്ലെങ്കില്‍ മനസ്സില്‍ എന്തോ ഒരു കുറ്റബോധം .അതാണ്‌ സത്യം.

    ഓണം കൊയ്ത്തിന്‍റെ ഉത്സവമാണ്.എന്നാല്‍ ഇന്നാരും കൊയ്യുന്നില്ല.പാടങ്ങള്‍ എല്ലാം വെട്ടി നികത്തി വീട് വെക്കുകയാണ്..അതിനു വിദേശത്തുനിന്നും ഒഴുകിവരുന്ന ധനവുമുണ്ട്. പല തരത്തിലും പരിഷ്ക്കാരത്തിലും വീടുകളുണ്ട്. പക്ഷെ വീട്ടിലിരുന്നാല്‍ ഉണ്ണാന്‍ വേണമല്ലോ..വലിയ വിലകൊടുത്തു അരി മേടിച്ചു നാം ഓണം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നു.പണ്ടു പറമ്പില്‍ നിന്നുള്ള പച്ചക്കറികള്‍ വലിയൊരു തറവാട്ടിലുള്ളവര്‍ക്ക് ധാരാളമായിരുന്നു.ഇന്ന് അതിനും അന്യനാടിനെ ആശ്രയിക്കണമെന്നായിരിക്കുന്നു.കിട്ടുന്നതോ ഉണങ്ങിയവ.അതും വലിയ വിലകൊടുത്താല്‍.

ഒരു കണക്കില്‍ പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഇന്ന് നമുക്ക് അന്യാശ്രയം കൂടാതെ ജീവിക്കാനാവില്ലെന്നു വന്നിരിക്കുന്നു.ഇതായിരുന്നോ നമ്മുടെ കേരളം? നമ്മുടെ കവികള്‍ ചിത്രീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നത് നോക്കുക

ഇങ്ങനെയോക്കെ കേരളത്തെപ്പറ്റി പഴയ കവികള്‍ പ്രകീര്ത്തിച്ചിരുന്നു.ഇന്ന് ഇതിലെന്തെങ്കിലുമുണ്ടോ ഇവിടെ?

    ഇതെല്ലാം സുഭിക്ഷമായി നല്‍കി നല്ലൊരു ഭരണം കാഴ്ചവെച്ച  പ്രജാവത്സലനായ ഒരു ചക്രവര്‍ത്തി നമുക്കുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.-ശ്രീ മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്‍റെ ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ഭക്തനുംഹിരണ്യകശിപുവിന്‍റെ പുത്രനുമായിരുന്നയിരുന്ന പ്രഹ്ലാദന്‍റെ പ്രപുത്രനായ  മഹാബലി.! പ്രഹ്ലാദന്‍റെഒരുവിധം എല്ലാ ഗുണങ്ങളും തികഞ്ഞ ചക്രവര്‍ത്തി..ഏതൊരു ഭരണാധികാരിക്കും അസൂയ തോന്നുന്ന ഭരണം! “മാവേലി നാടു വാണീടും കാലം” പാടാത്ത ചുണ്ടുകള്‍ ഉണ്ടോ? അതുപാടിക്കളിക്കാത്ത മങ്കമാരുണ്ടോ? ഇന്നും നല്ല ഒരു ഭരണാധികാരി എങ്ങിനെയിരിക്കണമെന്നതിനു നല്ലൊരു  മാതൃക!

   എന്നാല്‍ നല്ലവരെ അപായപ്പെടുതാന്‍ എപ്പോഴും ആളുകളുണ്ടാകും.ഇവിടെയും അതുതന്നെ സംഭവിച്ചു. മഹാബലിയുടെ ഗുണങ്ങള്‍ തന്‍റെ നിലനില്‍പ്പിന് ഭീഷണിയാകുമെന്നുവന്നപ്പോള്‍  സാക്ഷാല്‍ ദേവേന്ദ്രന്‍ മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിനെ സമീപിച്ച് മഹാബലിയെ അമര്‍ച്ച ചെയ്യണമെന്നു ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടു. തന്‍റെ ഭക്തനെ അനുഗ്രഹിക്കാന്‍ സമയമായി എന്നറിയുന്ന ഭഗവാന്‍ ഒരു വാമനന്‍(കുള്ളന്‍) ബ്രാഹ്മണനായി വന്നു മഹാദാനശീലനായ അദ്ദേഹത്തിനോട് തനിക്ക് ദാനം നല്‍കണമെന്ന് ആവശ്യപെട്ടു. മഹാബലിക്ക് താന്‍ വലിയോരു ദാനശീലനാനെന്ന അഹങ്കാരം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അതും കൂടി തീര്‍ക്കാനായിരുന്നു മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ വരവ്.എന്തും കൊടുക്കാന്‍ കഴിവുള്ള തന്നോടു കേവലം മൂന്നടി മണ്ണ് ആവശ്യപ്പെട്ടപ്പോള്‍

മഹാബലി പിന്നെ ഒന്നും ചിന്തിച്ചില്ല.പക്ഷെ അത് കണ്ടറിഞ്ഞ അസുരഗുരു മഹാബലിയെ വിലക്കിയെന്നു മാത്രമല്ല.ദാനത്തിനു നീര്‍ നല്‍കുമ്പോള്‍ അത് തടയാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു.പക്ഷെ വരാന്‍ പോകുന്നത് വഴിയില്‍ തങ്ങുമോ? അതും തീരുമാനിച്ചത് ഭഗവാനാണെങ്കില്‍! അദ്ദേഹം ഉടനെ ത്രിവിക്രമനായി രണ്ടടി കൊണ്ടു തന്നെ സര്വ്വലോകവും അളന്നെടുത്തു മൂന്നാമത്തെ അടിക്ക് ഇടമില്ലെന്ന് അറിയിച്ചു.കാര്യം മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ മഹാബലി ഉടനെ തന്‍റെ ശിരസ്സ് കുനിച്ചു കൊടുത്തു.വിഷ്ണു അദ്ദേഹത്തെ സുതലത്തിലെക്കയച്ചു. പോകുമ്പോള്‍ വര്‍ഷത്തിലോരിക്കല്‍ തന്‍റെ പ്രജകളെ വന്നു കാണാമെന്നും ആ സമയം ഭഗവാന്‍ സ്വയം  മഹാബലിയുടെ സ്ഥലംകാത്തുരക്ഷിച്ചുകൊള്ളമെന്നും ഉറപ്പുകൊടുത്തു.തന്‍റെ ഭക്തന്‍റെ പ്രജാവാല്സല്യം ഭക്തവല്സലനായ ഭഗവാന്‍ നല്ലപോലെ മനസ്സിലാക്കിയിരുന്നു. മഹാബലിയുടെ ആ വരവിനെ നാം ഓണമായി ആഘോഷിച്ചുവരുന്നു.വാമനന്‍റെ  ക്ഷേത്രമത്രേ തൃക്കാക്കര..അദ്ദേഹത്തെയാണ് നാം തൃക്കാക്കര അപ്പനായി പൂജിക്കുന്നത്.

    എനാല്‍ ഇന്ന് നാം ഈ മഹാഭാരണാധികാരിയെ അപമാനിക്കുന്ന തരത്തില്‍ പലതും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഓണത്തിന് വരുന്ന മാവേലി കിരീടവും  കുടവയറും ഓലക്കുടയും രാജകീയ വസ്ത്രങ്ങലുമണിഞ്ഞാണ് വരുന്നത് ആദ്യമായി ഒരു കാര്യം ഓര്‍മ്മിക്കേണ്ടതുണ്ട്.അന്ന് മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്‍റെ മുന്‍പില്‍ അഴിച്ചുവെച്ച കിരീടം മാവേലി പിന്നീട് തലയില്‍ വെച്ചിട്ടില്ല. രാജകീയ വസ്ത്രധാരണവും ചെയ്യുന്നില്ല. ഒരു സാധാരണക്കാരന്‍ ഓലക്കുട ചൂടുന്നതില്‍ വലിയ അപാകതയില്ല. പക്ഷെ എല്ലാ മാവേലിമാര്‍ക്കും കുടവയര്‍ വേണമെന്ന് ആരാണ് പറഞ്ഞത്? ആരെങ്കിലും അദ്ദേഹത്തെ കണ്ടവരുണ്ടോ?

    ഇന്നു മാവേലിയെ അധികവും പരസ്യത്തിനുവേണ്ടി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നു. അതും വല്ല വാച്ച്മാനെപ്പോലെ വാതില്‍ക്കല്‍ ഇരുത്തിയിരിക്കും. അതൊരു വലിയ കാര്യമായിട്ട്ടായിരിക്കും അവര്‍ കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. ഇതേ സമയം തന്‍റെ പൂര്വ്വപിതാക്കളെ അവര്‍ ഇത്തരത്തില്‍ പ്രദര്‍ശനവസ്തുവാക്കുമോ?.വീടുകാര്‍ ഇത്രയും തന്നെ അപമാനിക്കാറില്ല.വഴിയിലും മറ്റും മാവേലിയുടെ ചിത്രം അപഹാസ്യമായ വിധത്തില്‍ പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിക്കുന്നു..ഏറ്റവും വലിയ ധര്‍മ്മസങ്കടം അദ്ദേഹത്തെ മദ്യശാലയില്‍ പോലും ഇരുത്തിയിരിക്കും എന്നതാണ്. ഒരു പക്ഷെ അസുരനായതുകൊണ്ട് സുരാപാനം ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കാം എന്നവര്‍ ചിന്തിച്ചിരിക്കാം. തങ്ങളു അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്‍റെ കൂട്ടത്തില്‍പ്പെട്ടവരാണെന്നു അദ്ദേഹത്തെ ധരിപ്പിക്കനുമായിരിക്കാം!

ഏതായാലും ഓണം ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നവരോടു ഒരഭ്യര്‍ത്ഥന! മഹാനായ ആ ഭരണാധികാരിയെ ആദരിച്ചില്ലെങ്കിലും വേണ്ടില്ല, അപമാനിക്കരുതെ! കാരണം അദ്ദേഹം മഹാവിഷ്ണുവിന്റെ പരമഭക്തനാണ്.അദ്ദേഹത്തെ അപമാനിക്കുന്നത് ഭഗവാനെ അപമാനിക്കുന്നതിനു തുല്യമായിരിക്കും., , ധര്മ്മിഷ്ടനായ ശ്രീരാമനെപോലെ, ഗീതയോതിയ ശ്രീകൃഷ്ണനെപ്പോലെ മഹാനായ മുഗള്‍ ചക്രവര്‍ത്തി അക്ബര്‍പോലെ ഭാരതത്തിലെ മഹാനായ അശോകനെപോലെ നമ്മുടെ രാഷ്ട്രപിതാവിനെപോലെ നാം ആദരിക്കേണ്ട ഒരു വ്യക്തിയാണ് മഹാബലി.

   നമ്മുടെ ഓരോ ഓണവും അദ്ദേഹത്തിനോടുള്ള ബഹുമാനം പ്രകടിപ്പിച്ചുകൊണ്ടായിരിക്കട്ടെ! ആരെങ്കിലുംഅദ്ദേഹത്തെ അപഹാസ്യനാക്കി പ്രകടിപ്പിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ അതിനെ എതിര്‍ക്കാന്‍ നമുക്ക് കഴിയണം. അദ്ദേഹത്തിനു നമുക്ക് നല്‍കാന്‍ കഴിയുന്ന പ്രത്യുപകാരമതായിരിക്കട്ടെ. അല്ലാതെ കോമാളിവേഷം കെട്ടി അദ്ദേഹത്തെ പ്രദര്‍ശിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ നമ്മളും കൂട്ട് നില്‍ക്കാതിരിക്കുക..അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ മഹത്വം നാം മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കണം

Vision Statement from The Secretary

Reaching Out… to ALL

It is with great humility I say that I am proud to be the Hon. Gen. Secretary of The Borivli Malayali Samajam in its Golden Jubilee year. Without doubt it is a great challenge. And at this moment, I wonder if at the end of the 50^th year I would have been able to do justice to the legacy of the Samajam.

The big challenge would be for me to measure - What is it that I have done different? Well, I guess that is how my efficiency will be ascertained. And to get my act together every Managing Committee member, every member and the Society in general will have to keep the torch burning and burning bright.

When I say society, I mean all the linguistic communities and not restricted to Malayalis alone. Tough Call… hai na. But the point is why not?

For more than 50 years we have made this vibrant city of Mumbai and particularly Borivli our Home. It is the place where we have studied, been nurtured, earning our bread, butter and jam. So what if we get into a traffic jam once in a while. But this has been our place of livelihood. We need to admit that. And I think it is pay back time. It is time for us to be recognised as giving back to the place we live, to the society and we can do that as a community and as Borivli Malayali Samajam.

Our School, the admission criteria of the School, the activities in the school from Karate Classes to Dance Classes are all in that direction. My pledge is that the Borivli Malayali Samajam is not about being in a silo limiting ourselves to only us, we are now on the threshold of reaching out to the other communities as well. And why not? Why limit the spread of our intelligence to reach out only to us. Let us spread this word the word that The Borivli Malayali Samajam is here to provide ideas and platform for every community to prosper by way of knowledge and skills.

And this we are doing because we are indebted to the friends that we made, and each of those friends are not necessarily only Malayalis they were from all walks of life and different communities. Since each one of them has never thought of us as a member from different community why should we differentiate when we can give back? …. Kyon hai Na?

I think by doing so we are ascertaining ourselves as leaders in our city.

And the big thing is that we are not doing it first time. For years we have been having competition on Folk Dance, Inter School Athletic, Painting and Elocution Competition for students across schools from Bandra to Dahisar and mind you it was not limited to Malyalis – the competing students belong to all communities.

So here I am - pledging to ensure that the participating communities will be from all walks of life economically and linguistically. And I want each one of you to be part of this milestone that we create for the 50th year.

And mind you we are talking to a generation where webcams connected at both ends allow conferencing and when the 5g comes… well life will move @ speed of thought. Join in now.

Maybe our children will be proud of us, and maybe they will not stray to other communities. Cos… the big question is besides asking them whether they know Malayalam what else have we given them to be proud off???

This Onam program on October 2^nd will be a measure of how you have contributed towards the goal of bringing in your non – malayali neighbour.

And we will count that.

From Manasi Nair…. Dil Se.

One of the biggest things in life is that one should be able to dance to the rhythm that life offers. And the achievement of it all is that when you see the footprints on the stage of life and reminisces each step with what life has given you and how we have respected life by giving it back to the society. This is the moment of pride, of triumph, of glory and the halo of success.

Little did Manasi know when she was in Standard 2^nd and when she took her first tiny dance steps under the guidance of Shri Anantanarayanan her guru about how dancing will lead her from one big stage to another, in one country to another and especially that of two cold war countries both hypnotized by the same dancing steps as she would perform for them. The GURU SHISHYA PARAMPARA of the yester years still brings the divinity of the Guru in her.

She recalls how she along with her very talented batch mates like Priya Menon, Laxmi was given various platforms to showcase their talent under the guidance of Shri Anantanarayanan. She perormed at various Ayyappa Poojas, Malayali Samajam functions and she particularly remembers her performance during the 25th anniversary celebrations of The Borivli Malayali Samajam.

When her School Principal Shri J M SHAH (JB KHOT SCHOOL) retired, he insisted that she should perform a show on his send off day, an honour that she cannot and will not forget in her lifetime.
       

She did her Arrengatam with Guru Anantanarayan arranging her training under Guru Shri Ramaswami Bhagawdara (GURU OF SUDHA CHANDRAN ALSO). Shri AKG Nair the then President of the Samajam and her School Principal Shri J M Shah were the Chief Guests on the occasion. The pictures below showcase them all.

After her School she joined the Nalanda Nrityakala Mahavidyalaya University of Mumbai and completed her MASTER OF FINE ARTS in BHARAT NATYAM with distinction. This institution is headed by Padmasree Smt Kanak Rele.

Today she is proud of her association with the Borivli Malayali Samajam and the glory of it is that in its 50th year – she will be part of the celebration.

She states emphatically that “I am a part of the samajam. I would also like to put forth that the attitude of BMS has been very cordial and warm towards students from all sections of society because I am not a born Malayali I could make it out; and now I consider myself very lucky to be married to a Malayali and I follow all Malayali rituals at home and also cook all traditional Malayali cuisines, and the pudding is that I have a Malayali husband who is now the President of the Borivli Malayali Samajam”

    

Manasi have performed at various levels in INDIA AND ABROAD, her recent performances had been at the National School of Drama (New Delhi),SATARA FESTIVAL, ISKCON TEMPLE (AUDIENCE AROUND 3000 PEOPLE), A SHOW IN CAMBODIA FOR INDIAN CONSULATE AND INDIANS SETTLED THERE,  KALA GHODA FESTIVAL MUMBAI, PRITHVI THEATRE, A SHOW FOR AMERICAN CONSULATES,  A SHOW FOR INDIAN AND RUSSIAN NAVAL COMMANDERS, AND VARIOUS SHOWS FOR AYYAPA TEMPLES AND LIVE SHOWS.  

She has also been awarded with NRITYA SHIVALI. Popular dailies like TIMES OF INDIA, HINDUSTAN TIMES, DNA ETC HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT HER FROM TIME TO TIME.

AT PRESENT THERE ARE AROUND 300 STUDENTS WHO ARE LEARNING THIS ART FROM HER ACADEMY NAMED - TAPASYA AN ACADEMY OF PERFORMING ARTS (REGD).

My Child - Anu

As would happen with most parents, our bundle of joy got bigger when our daughters painting was published in Mumbai Mirror.

Being a 3rd standard student of Rustomjee International School she takes part in all extra curricular activities. And the most interesting thing is that my 8 year old... lives in her own world. And she never ever ignores her studies.

This drawing was done by her while she was in school and we are only too happy to share it with each one of you.

Dear Members,

It’s a matter of great pride for us, the Malayalis of Borivli that we have reached the 50th year of our noble existence in Borivli. In this the 50th year you have entrusted me with the great responsibility of being the President of our Samajam, which is poised to climb further heights and surely I will put my best efforts to take it forward, as my predecessors did during the golden times of our Samajam.

I would also like to inform you all that my uncles Late Shri M.Shreedharan Nair and                                Shri T.Chandrashekaran Nair have served the Samajam for many years and were part of the Managing Committee when we celebrated the 25th year anniversary.

Moreover, Smt.Manasi Nair who is a Bharatnatyam exponent having done her Master of Fine Arts from Nalanda Nrityakala Mahavidyalay headed by Padmasri Dr. Kanak Rele learnt this divine art at our Samajam Classes under Guru Shri Anantnarayanan and participated in the 25th anniversary celebrations of our Samajam. She is now my wife, so my association with the Samajam goes long back; although in an indirect way.

Further, with the support of all our esteemed members I have a vision to turn our school project to a land mark Educational and Sports Center. We will ensure all our services like Diagnostic Centre and Ayurvedic Panchkarma Centre are made available to all sections of the society. However, all our traditional activities will continue as usual and no compromise will be made in this regard.

Our Samajam's web site is  functional and user friendly, you can send your creative workings viz. poems, stories, drawings, paintings, photographs, write ups, etc. to be selectively uploaded either on the website www.borivlimalayalisamajam.com  or on the blog – www.borivlimalayalis.blogspot.com .       You may also write in your opinions, suggestions to secretary@borivlimalayalisamajam.com.

At this juncture, my humble appeal to all of you is, take keen part in our Samajam activities and make use of our infrastructure to the maximum. All our members in the field of   Art, Education, Theater, Science and Technology, Sports, etc., may please come forward and make our 50th year anniversary a grand success.

We have already formed a Golden Jubilee Celebration Committee with Mr. Anup Chalakaran as Chairman and Mr. N. Gangadharan as the Secretary. There are sub-committees as well and we are on the lookout for our members who have time, taste and interest, to come forward and make the event a memorable one. The details are enclosed herewith for your kind reference and we look forward to your association.

I once again thank you for entrusting this noble job to me and I ensure total transparency and growth in the coming times.

The Independence Day at the School

The Independence Day celebrations at the V K Krishna Menon Academy run by The Borivli Malayali Samajam brought back memories from my very prim and proper school days. It was an emotional moment of the lovely school times, times of hope and willingness where innocence was the order of the day, and politics far behind.

The celebrations in all earnest began with a prayer by the school children, this was followed by the flag hoisting. And this time there was rains during the flag hoisting at the school and so at the capital. A blessing from the heavens above.

The recital of the Vande Mataram with pictures of various states in the background added up to the feeling of unity and welfare for all. A very nice thing was the introduction of the National leaders with the children being dressed up as the leaders was interesting.

The inspiring speech made by the President of the Samajam in Hindi also was a highlight.

The march past by the boys .. took me back to my Scout days of being a proud Indian and a soldier for the causes of the country.

The interest taken by the Principal and the Teachers in encouraging and training the students is the most appreciable one.
